This is the web site of the Institute of Journalists Malaysia, which seeks to be the professional body of journalists. It is a tax-exempt non-profit organisation, registered under the Companies Act 1964 as a company limited by guarantee.
The Institute is an independent, self-supporting, apolitical and non-partisan organisation which aims to represent the professional journalism fraternity of Malaysia.
The founding of the Institute has its origins in a proposal and working paper by former newspaper editor Gobind Rudra, which received unanimous endorsement by the journalism community gathered at the National Press Club, Kuala Lumpur, on World Press Freedom Day, 3rd May 2012.
The Institute of Journalists Malaysia was incorporated on April 5, 2014.
Membership of the Institute is open to all working journalists, employed or freelance, in all media sectors and all language streams, such as newspapers, broadcasting and online media, as well as to others in the journalism community such as journalism educators and college and university students enrolled in journalism and related studies.
The Institute’s aims are to promote professional standards, values and ethics; safeguard the professional interests, welfare and safety of all journalists; and improve the public standing of Malaysian journalism and journalists. It intends to promote professional development and improve skills through training courses by setting up a journalism training institution, and award fellowships through a Journalism Foundation.
The Institute is also bound by its constitution to uphold and defend the freedom of the press and freedom of expression as being necessary for the practice of journalism.
